Massachusetts -- Passed the “Against Blasphemy of the Name of God” statute that
extended to law against blasphemy to Indians and pagans, as well. It defined
“blasphemy of God’s name” as “the obstinate denial of Him, cursing Him, or
reproaching His `holy religion’ of Christianity.” It defined “heresy” as
“obstinately held errors of opinion that tended to subvert Christianity and
