How did the
Declaration of Independence acquire ideas from the Hebrew Scriptures? In 1492
the Jews of Spain were expelled by royal decree; five years later the Jews of Portugal
faced a similar fate. They were educated, wealthy, and had many contacts with Muslim
and Christian communities. Over a century later, Christian colonists arrived in
America with Hebrew Scriptures and ideas linked to forming a new government. Sadly,
this part of our history didn’t make it into our history books or Sunday School
