The next thing to remember is: Make sure you know what kind of money you are following! January 1971: US gold reserve at Federal Reserve Bank New York (Manhattan) will cover only 22% of the liabilities the US owes to foreign central banks. The crisis caused a gradual loss of confidence in the dollar. From January to August 1971, $20 billion in gold fled to other countries.
