Why is the Creator in the Declaration of Independence?

 

Why is the “Creator” in the Declaration of Independence? We can’t pretend to understand, “We hold these truths to be self-evident . . .,” until we answer the first question. In the very first sentence of the Declaration, the colonists describe themselves as founding a country that would take its “separate and equal” place on the world’s stage.
