TOV Isn’t a Secret

TOV describes something that is beautiful and pleasing to the Creator’s eyes because it protects life, preserves life, makes life more functional and improves the quality.

TOV isn’t a secret. It is definitely a universal value. What would happen if members of the following religions made these their highest values and top priorities?

● You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Judaism - Leviticus 19:18)

● What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. This is the law: all the rest is commentary. (Judaism - Talmud, Shabbat 31a)

● Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do even so to them – for this is the law and the prophets. (Christianity - Matthew 7:12)

● And as you would that men should do to you, do also to them likewise. (Christianity - Luke 6:31)

● And don't do what you hate. (Christianity - Gospel of Thomas 6)

● None of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself. (Islam - Number 13 of Imam "Al-Nawawi's Forty Hadiths)

● A state that is not pleasing or delightful to me, how could I inflict that upon another? (Buddhism - Samyutta NIkaya v. 353)

● Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. (Buddhism - Udana-Varga 5:18)

● This is the sum of Dharma [duty]: Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you. (Brahmanism - Mahabharata, 5:1517)

● Regard your neighbor’s gain as your gain, and your neighbor’s loss as your own loss. (Taoism - Tai Shang Kan Yin P’ien)

● This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you. (Hinduism - Mahabharata 5:1517)

● That nature alone is good which refrains from doing to another whatsoever is not good for itself. (Zoroastrianism - Dadisten-I-dinik, 94,5)

● Whatever is disagreeable to yourself do not do unto others. (Zoroastrianism - Shayast-na-Shayast 13:29 5)

● Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you. (Confucianism - Analects 15:23)

● Tse-kung asked, 'Is there one word that can serve as a principle of conduct for life?' Confucius replied, 'It is the word 'shu' -- reciprocity. Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire. (Confucianism - Doctrine of the Mean 13.3)

● Try your best to treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself, and you will find that this is the shortest way to benevolence. (Confucianism - Mencius VII.A.4)

● Therefore, neither does he [a sage] cause violence to others nor does he make others do so. (Jainism - Acarangasutra 5.101-2)

● In happiness and suffering, in joy and grief, we should regard all creatures as we regard our own self. (Jainism - Lord Mahavira, 24th Tirthankara)

● A man should wander about treating all creatures as he himself would be treated. (Jainism - Sutrakritanga 1.11.33)

● And if thine eyes be turned towards justice, choose thou for thy neighbor that which thou choosest for thyself. (Bahá'í Faith - Epistle to the Son of the Wolf. 1)

A School Kitchen Manager Teaches Us TOV!

The ancient Rabbinic Sages Taught: "Ayne Kemach, Ayne Torah", essentially, if there's not food (bread), there can be no learning. A school kitchen manager in a Denver school district was fired recently. Her terrible Crime? She gave free lunches to some hungry students who did not have any money, some who were chronically hungry without funds. Others, she paid for their lunches out of her own money. This woman lives her Values!

She could have been safe just "Following Orders", instead she chose to Do TOV. This is what distinguishes one person from the next. This is what makes real heroes -- people who first recognize the need and then respond – either as individuals or with a group who are willing to act together to change or correct something for the common good.

Further. All of our "Religious Memes" (beliefs) are WORTHLESS, unless we practice them! Especially when it comes to Feeding Hungry Children and taking care of the Most Vulnerable Members of our Society.

The article about the kitchen manager did not specify if these were local laws or just the school’s rules, but in the Cherry Creek School District, students who fail to qualify for the free lunch or reduced lunch program receive "A SLICE OF CHEESE ON A HAMBURGER BUN AND A SMALL CARTON OF MILK." It would be interesting to give the person or persons responsible for creating that rule "A SLICE OF CHEESE ON A HAMBURGER BUN AND A SMALL CARTON OF MILK" – and nothing else – and send them on to work.

You know, there is one thing that come up repeatedly when we look at things “programs” that are supposed to help the most vulnerable people in America – the program comes first and the people second. Think about this mentality for a moment. The school board saw a violation of a rule and acted to punish the kitchen manager. Did they see the hungry children? What did they do about them? Will they go to their house of worship and smugly Be Right With God?

The greatest struggle America faces today is this – as a nation we place value (money) over values. The kitchen manager placed Life over value. She said," I'll own that I broke the law. The law needs to change.” Hopefully, she will be able to form a "collective of people that Value the wellbeing of the children” and change the law. That my friends, is how TOV works!

Which should come first – values or laws? Our Founding Generation answered this question in our Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Our laws are supposed to reflect the above values, which include “promote the general Welfare.” Did you notice that it doesn’t say – “if it’s in the program”? This woman's Values reveals much about her character and her sense of TZEDDEK (Justice and Righteousness), taught in Jewish & Christian Traditions. Her words, thoughts  and actions PRESERVED LIFE, PROTECTED LIFE, MAKE LIFE MORE FUNCTIONAL AND INCREASED THE QUALITY OF LIFE. I know the Creator likes what she did – and I bet the Founding Fathers would too!

Redeeming the Captives, an Ancient TOV Idea

I was flipping through channels and came upon a program about Human Trafficking. We all hear about things like this, but after an initial shock, they are soon forgotten. Many of us "modern" people don't really think about "slavery." That concept is relegated to Biblical times or before the Civil War -- but "slavery", like so many other evils, never goes away.

In the Hebrew Bible, Rabbinic writings, Jewish history and prayers - redeeming captives appears a number of times. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to redeem captives. Today we hear on the news about Somali pirates, Boko Haram, Isis and other groups who take captives and engage in forms of slavery. But it is important to be aware of other forms of "captivity" and "slavery," too. People fleeing poverty and war are at the mercy of human traffickers. Here in Texas, and other border states, hundreds and thousands of people try to come illegally, to find some rescue, safety and a chance at having a life.

The program I watched also talked about a group of nuns in Italy who help migrant women from Africa who've been lured into prostitution by the promise of a better life. Vulnerable and usually penniless, they end up as victims in the billion-dollar international market of human exploitation. The nuns created a shelter where women are able to hide from their "handlers" and break free from the streets. Those in the shelter live together and are taught sewing skills and to gain confidence and learn the language. In the past 20 years over 370 women, mostly from Nigeria have found refuge and learned skills to enable them to make a living and a life. In cooperation with social workers and embassies, the nuns assist the women in getting new documents that are necessary for a new start.

This is a great example of doing TOV -- redeeming from captivity and slavery and helping a person to become "self-sufficient." This is one of the Highest ideals and Values in Jewish tradition. The nuns did the things necessary to create TOV -- THEY PROTECTED LIFE, PRESERVED LIFE, INCREASED THE FUNCTIONALITY OF LIFE AND IMPOROVED THE QUALITY OF LIFE!

There are a number of other things that we are captive to, but that's for another story. In the meantime -- Do TOV and Choose Life.
